ICANN approves: beginning of the era .any

Once upon a time .com, .net, .org.  There was a world of simple and structured domains with dedicated compartments that made it easier to understand the overall structure. Now the gTLD (Generic Top Level Domains) have been extended to .biz, .info and many others. But is not enough. In fact, ICANN has approved the final explosion of the domains.

From 12 January 2012 anyone can have its own domain after paying fee (while remaining within strict rules). From now, anyone can open their domain and, with the approval of ICANN, can manage it with own rules and principles. In the future will can see domains as gmail.google, msn.microsoft or something like that.
In order to advance the proposal, however, need to pay the entity (ICANN) $ 185.000, then be necessary to keep alive its garantuees with a payment equal to $ 25.000 per year. This will be not a problem for the big companies. It's obvious that an ordinary person can hardly afford these prices.
Anyway, the repercussions will be many, but there is plenty of time to adapt the network to the world of things to come.

Current gTLD.

In my honest opinion i dont think is a good idea. It seems that ICAAN has chosen this solution for exploiting it for money, because from a pratical standpoint it makes little sense. The hierarchical and ordered system that there was so far has worked well, i dont see why a "radical" change.
However, only a few years we can judge whether this was a good choice or not.
